"Pintura é coisa grave, que não se compadece com a gravidade enchapelada de alguns que a julgam ver — e que é afinal a forma mais grotesca da ligeireza. Ocorre-me isto com muita nitidez diante desta última série de trabalhos de Valente Alves porque, a meu ver de modo exemplar, ela repudia a facilidade e impõe ao espectador um grau de exigência tão apurado como aquele que começou por devorar o próprio pintor.
Frente a estes quadros, senhores, só se conquista a felicidade do gozo a pulso de muita e activa contemplação. A guloseima visual (e táctil) desta pintura simultaneamente rica e despojada apenas nos é oferecida após um esforço nosso de higiene e pobreza, suscitador de uma sede nova que vá depois sofregamente absorver cada forma, cada mancha, cada empastamento ou raspagem. Cada vestígio vivo da paixão do pintor.
De primitivos fala Valente Alves. E, na verdade, reconhecem-se símbolos e formas próprias de uma arte que em dado momento deu a volta à cabeça da arte moderna ocidental, virando-a simultaneamente para Avinhão e África. Mas atrevo-me a pensar que não é isso o que estes quadros têm de mais primitivo — antes a inaugural pureza dos gestos que os criaram e dos olhos que exigem."

"Painting is a serious thing, which does not compensate for the gravity of the faces of some who see it as the most grotesque form of lightness. This is very clear to me in the face of this last series of works by Valente Alves, as I see it in an exemplary way, it repudiates the facility and imposes on the viewer a degree of demand as accurate as that which began by devouring the painter himself.
In front of these pictures, gentlemen, one can only conquer happiness from the enjoyment of a lot of active contemplation. The visual and tactile delight of this simultaneously rich and stripped painting is only offered to us after our effort of hygiene and poverty, the source of a new thirst, which will afterwards suffice to absorb every form, every stain, every dye or scraping. Every living trace of the painter's passion.
Of primitive speaks Valente Alves. And, in fact, they recognize symbols and forms proper to an art that at one time has circled the head of modern Western art, turning it simultaneously to Avignon and Africa. But I dare to think that this is not what these paintings are most primitive - rather the inaugural purity of the gestures that created them and the eyes they demand."
