No teatro, Bob Wilson encena Faust I e II.
FAUSTO, o mistério do mundo
Qual é a nossa condenação?
Somos Fausto(?)

Declensions of FAUST
In the beginning was the myth, the German legend that tells of the pact that Dr. Johannes G. Faust (1480-1540) would have done with the devil. The Doctor. Faust was an alchemist, a magician, an astrologer, a prophet disillusioned with the limits of scholastic knowledge of the time. In exchange for his soul, he receives the intellectual energy he needs to believe in science, technology, progress and also eternity.
Literature has tried to gloss this narrative in several published works. But it is the work “Faust, a tragedy” by Goethe published in 1808 (part 1) that is remarkable. And if in this first part the dissatisfaction with his knowledge of the world dominates, in the second (published posthumously in 1832), the big questions are pleasure and power. In both, the dominant axes of human existence are present.
The creative and literary production of the character continued with the works of Puchkin, Grabbe, Paul Valéry (Mon Faust), Fernando Pessoa (Faust: a subjective tragedy), Thomas Mann (Doktor Faustus), Rafael Dionísio, Edgar Brau and António Vieira (with the novel Doctor Fausto 1991).
In music, the figure of Faust marks the works of Wagner, Berlioz, Schumann, Liszt and Gounod. In the theater, Bob Wilson stages Faust I and II. But it is cinema, Murnau's film (1926), that is summoned by Manuel Valente Alves in the work he presents at MIRA FORUM.
FAUST, the mystery of the world
In this video, the artist brings Faust to contemporary society in what will be the first proposal to approach the myth in this medium. After all, the questions that arise apply to the contemporary world: dissatisfaction, permanent restlessness in a short life. The will to want to know and dominate everything is faced with the inherent impossibility. But the difficulty in accepting its limits leads humans to consider that continuous growth is possible and, thus, exploits the world's resources, transforming nature to the point of destroying it and jeopardizing its very existence.
In the video by Manuel Valente Alves, the images from Murnau's film alternate with shapeless projections of advertising videos of a center of a large metropolis. These are mind-blowing sequences in which we guess brands associated with consumption and speculation. This alternation, this association reveals the reflection of the Faustian myth: the permanent dissatisfaction, the desire to exceed limits, the anguish of the awareness of finitude, the voracity of time, the vertigo of wanting to know and have everything.
Manuel Valente Alves shows the skyscrapers with blind windows, then directs the gaze to the ground to observe a snail, perhaps remembering the need to slow down and collect the shell, and a beetle that, in measured movements, seeks to avoid (or look for?) the gap, the rift.
Citing the fire and smoke from Murnau's Faust, the video ends in a fiery smoke that worries and questions.
What is our hell?
What is our condemnation?
We are Faust(?)
