"Todo o pintor, a dado passo da obra, pinta em cinzentos. Outras poderão ser as cores de pintar a alegria, o melancolismo ou a agressividade. Os cinzentos disciplinam, os cinzentos são a reflexão sobre a própria pintura. É com essa não-cor que os pintores formulam, geralmente, o intervalo de reflexão sobre a cor e o espaço. Quero dizer, por último, que é um espaço de interrogação, esse. [...] À extrema ductibilidade do espaço na anterior pintura, à sua mobilidade lírica e depois expressiva, contrapõe ou acrescenta, agora, o pintor a monumentalidade estática dos seus sinais, a gravidade dos negros, a cobertura impenetrável dos mantos cinzentos embora cintilantes. Adivinha-se que houve noutro tempo, — esta pintura constrói-se no tempo — em instantes outros a tentação de perfurar pela cor essa gravidade gris que hoje se vê nela. Percebe-se, logo, porque não foi isso possível ou sequer perdurável: ninguém desafia o sagrado sem o temor, sem a angústia que esse desafio traz consigo."

"Every painter, at a given step of the work, paints in grays. Others may be the colors of painting joy, melancholy or aggressiveness. The gray ones discipline, the gray ones are the reflection on the painting itself. It is with this non-color that painters usually formulate the interval of reflection on color and space. I mean, lastly, it's a question mark, this one. [...] The extreme ductility of space in the previous painting, its lyrical and then expressive mobility, now contrasts or adds to the painter the static monumentality of his signs, the gravity of the blacks, the impenetrable cover of the gray mantles, though scintillating. It is guessed that there was another time - this painting is built in time - at other moments the temptation to pierce by color that gray gravity that is seen in it today. It is perceived, therefore, that this was not possible or even lasting: no one defies the sacred without fear, without the anguish that this challenge brings with it."
