Manuel Valente Alves (Abrantes, Portugal) vive e trabalha em Lisboa. É formado em Medicina pela Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. O seu trabalho como artista visual tem-se  desenvolvido em torno do conceito de paisagem, problematizando as suas relações com o corpo, a memória e a política. Utiliza uma grande variedade de técnicas e suportes (pintura, desenho, fotografia, vídeo, filme e instalação) através dos quais cria séries, exposições e outros projectos, nomeadamente para edição em livro e na web.
      Desde 1983, realizou mais de quatro dezenas de exposições individuais e participou em mais quarenta exposições colectivas em importantes museus, galerias e outras instituições culturais, dentro e fora de Portugal. A sua obra visual encontra-se representada em numerosas colecções privadas, museus, bibliotecas e outras instituições culturais.
      O seu interesse pelo pensamento e prática interdisciplinares tem-no levado a desenvolver, paralelamente à sua prática artística, trabalho de investigação e de curadoria nas áreas da história, da filosofia e da museologia, ligando arte, ciência, medicina e cultura visual. Neste âmbito, é autor, editor e co-editor de cerca de duas dezenas de livros, tem feito palestras, a convite de universidades, museus, sociedades científicas e outras instituições culturais, em Portugal e no estrangeiro, e organizado colóquios e conferências interdisciplinares. Manuel Valente Alves (Abrantes, Portugal) lives and works in Lisbon. He is graduated in Medicine by the Faculty of Medicine,  University of Lisbon. His work as a visual artist has been developed around the concept of landscape, problematizing its relationship with the body, memory and politics. He uses a wide variety of techniques and supports (painting, drawing, photography, video, film and installation) through which he creates series, exhibitions and other projects, namely for editing in book and on the web.
      Since 1983, he held more than four dozen solo exhibitions and participated in more than forty collective exhibitions at major museums, galleries and other cultural institutions, both inside and outside Portugal. His visual work is represented in several private collections, museums, libraries and other cultural institutions.His interest in interdisciplinary thinking and practice has led him to develop, in parallel with his artistic practice, research and curatorial work in the fields of history, philosophy and museology, linking visual culture to art, science and medicine. In this field he is the author, editor and co-editor of about two dozen books, he has given lectures at the invitation of universities, museums, scientific societies and other cultural institutions in Portugal and abroad, and he has organized interdisciplinary colloquia and conferences.
