2. Assim, por exemplo, a flor simples torna-se quase sempre composta, se, em vez de estames e anteras, se desenvolverem pétalas que ou são perfeitamente iguais na forma e na cor às restantes folhas da corola ou contêm ainda os sinais visíveis da sua origem.

Ora, se repararmos que é possível desta maneira que as plantas dêem um passo para trás e que invertam a ordem do crescimento, tanto mais atenção havemos de ter ao caminho regular da Natureza, e, assim, chegamos a conhecer as leis da metamorfose, pelas quais ela produz uma parte através da outra e apresenta as partes mais diferentes pela modificação de um único órgão."

If we realize that it is possible in this way for plants to step back and reverse the order of growth, so much more attention should we have to the regular path of the Nature, and thus we come to know the laws of metamorphosis, by which it produces one part through another and presents the most different parts by modifying a single organ."
